How to get your IRS PTIN
An IRS PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number) is a unique identification number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to tax professionals who prepare and file tax returns on behalf of clients.
It is a requirement for anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation.
If you preparer tax returns on behalf of clients, and you do not have a PTIN #, you will have to disclose your Social Security Number on the tax returns you prepare for your clients.
To apply for an IRS PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number), you can follow these steps:
Visit the IRS website: Go to the IRS website at www.irs.gov.
Access the PTIN application: On the IRS website, search for "PTIN application" in the search bar or navigate to the "Tax Professionals" section.
Create an IRS online account: If you don't already have one, you'll need to create an IRS online account. Follow the instructions to set up your account, which will include providing your personal information and creating a username and password.
Start the PTIN application: Once you have an IRS online account, log in and start the PTIN application process. You'll need to provide information such as your name, Social Security Number (or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number), contact information, and professional credentials.
Answer questions and provide information: The application will ask you various questions regarding your tax-related activities, professional status, and any prior issues or convictions related to tax matters. Answer all the questions accurately and provide any required documentation to support your application, if requested.
Pay the PTIN fee: There is a fee associated with obtaining a PTIN. The IRS will provide information on the current fee amount and payment options. Follow the instructions to pay the fee. Note that the fee may change, so be sure to check the IRS website for the most up-to-date information.
Submit the application: Review all the information you have provided, ensure its accuracy, and submit your PTIN application. You will receive a confirmation once your application has been successfully submitted.
Wait for PTIN approval: The IRS will review your application, including conducting a background check, and will notify you once your PTIN has been approved. This process typically takes a few weeks, but it may vary.
The IRS implemented the PTIN system as a way to oversee tax return preparers and also to keep taxpayers’ security in mind.
It's important to note that the steps and requirements may change over time, so it's always a good idea to visit the official IRS website for the most up-to-date information and instructions on applying for a PTIN.
